This is a self portrait with excellent lighting. An example of making good use of contrasts between light and shadow.

Rembrandt van Rijn was the master of shining light on his subjects and catching that light on canvas, but he died bankrupt living with his son in law. Maybe because the Dutch are notorious cheapskates.

A story goes that copperwire was invented when 2 Dutchmen who fought over a cent and neither would let go.

True story, or maybe it's a Belgian joke.

Anyway, this is a 350$ drawing in a 250$ frame, (12x16") which makes for a very nice gift without being too tryhard.

If you want to go all out, there are full size oil portraits of 24x30" available, they come with a 6 inch frame. You can hang those in the Oval Office and they look like they belong there. That's a 4500$ investment.

Hit the instagram button if nothing else, I'd appreciate it, and you'll find journey from "nice drawings" to "captivating pieces of art" and landscapes from before that.

Personal portraits

This elderly gentleman saw some of my black and white drawings, and commissioned my first full color drawing.

20 years of landscape painting turned out to be great school for portraits.

Family portraits

I instructed the grandparents of this family how to position the faces in the sun light.

The kid has shadow next to the light on his cheek, the perfect Rembrandt eye-magnet I'm looking for.

pet portraits

Lady in the sun.

Another example

of how the light next to shadow

makes all the difference.

I can work from foto's you send me, but a more precise way is when I make a recording of a short whatsapp chat in which we work together to get some interesting light going with so called Rembrandt-lighting as goal. Rembrandt was the master of catching light on faces. He set the standard to be strived for.
